Judging dogs is a privilege-one I try never to take for granted. It’s a remarkable opportunity to evaluate each dog weighing the strengths and weaknesses through the lens of the Standard. And yet knowing that each day of judging can vary with the setting, the handler and the dog’s response to all those factors. The process is rarely black and white- it’s more like trying to keep ten plates spinning at once, but I truly enjoy the challenge!
I believe judging dogs requires you to rely on your past experiences both in and out of the ring. I’ve been fortunate to have many generous mentors who shared their time and insights. My professional background as both a veterinary technician and instructor of anatomy and physiology taught me to understand structure and its vital importance. Riding dressage refined my eye for balance in movement while my observations in lure coursing and hunting events pushed me to re-evaluate how form meets function in the real world.
Since 1990, my husband Jim and I have bred Irish Wolfhounds under the August prefix, always on a very limited scale, with a focus on athleticism and power called for in the Standard while keeping an eye on health and longevity so desired by anyone who owns this amazing breed. Our activities in the breed have taken us all over the US and occasionally to Europe, learning from dedicated fanciers from all over the world.
My hope is always to find a judge that shares an honest opinion- giving a thoughtful and sincere evaluation of the dogs on the day. That’s what I believe specialties are for: a place to share knowledge, exchange perspectives and celebrate both our common ground and our differences.
Thank you so much for bringing dogs to me to judge.
Will judge:
Saturday: Irish Wolfhound males, BIS final, BIS puppy, BIS Progeny and BIS Breeder
Sunday: Irish Wolfhound Bitches
